On Thursday’s broadcast of Bloomberg’s “Balance of Power,” Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL) responded to a question about what would happen to immigrants in Chicago, saying that “the average undocumented person in this country has been here for twelve years. And, again, most of it is overstaying the visa period, to show people who are contributing to the US, who are paying taxes, who, in many cases, are married. can Or living with American citizens that we’re going to tear apart your family, you can’t be more anti-family than that.
Co-host Joe Matthews asked, “[W]When you go to your city, Chicago.gov, it says ‘The city has taken on the responsibility of caring for more than 49,000 immigrants, new arrivals, asylum seekers, many coming to Chicago from states like Texas. What will happen to Donald Trump when he takes power?”
Casten responded, “Well, it’s important to understand where these people come from. There [was] The number of immigrants increased when Greg Abbott was bussing people in from Texas. But if you look nationally, and Chicago is no different, the overwhelming majority of undocumented people in our country are not people coming across the border – no matter how many – as much as we love to fall into that lazy stereotype. – They’re people who came here legally and overstayed their visa period, maybe it’s a student who studied here, maybe they fell in love while they were studying here gone and their one child It’s done. There are people who had a temporary work visa and then the temporary work visa was not renewed. In many cases, … they may be less in Chicago, but certainly in downstate Illinois, they are the farmworkers we depend on to grow our food, but our programs have provided support for these people. Not provided. So, to tell those people that the average undocumented person in this country has been here for twelve years, and, again, most of that is due to overstaying the visa period, to tell these people that As for who’s contributing to America, who’s paying taxes, who, in many cases, whether you’re married or living with American citizens, we’re going to break up your family, you’re going to have more family- There cannot be opponents. “And this is creating a lot of panic not just in Chicago but across the country.”
