The Associated Press is being criticized for handing out its third nod for Female Athlete of the Year to controversial Olympic boxer Imane Khalif, who failed the gender test.
The AP announced its awards rankings, revealing that its Female Athlete of the Year was WNBA star rookie Kaitlynn Clark. The next two runners-up were American Olympic gymnast Simone Biles in second place and Algerian Olympic boxer Imane Khalif, who placed third with four votes.
Khalife, of course, sparked controversy by failing the gender test and being disqualified from the women’s division at boxing competitions throughout 2023, but she was still allowed to box as a woman at this year’s Paris Olympics. Unsurprisingly, the Algerian destroyed every woman she faced in the ring and won the gold medal in boxing in August.
“The IBA disqualified Khalif, who fights in the 66 kg division, and Taiwanese fighter Lin Yu-ting, who fights in the 57 kg division, from fighting in its women’s tournaments in March 2023 on the grounds that they failed in unspecified tests to confirm that Had failed. They fit the governing body’s definition of a woman,” reports Breitbart’s Francis Martel. “IBA President Umar Kremlev told Russian news agency Tass at the time that Lynn and Khalif have ‘XY chromosomes,’ a Human is the genetic structure of male.
“The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed Lin and Khalif to compete because it does not use IBA testing standards, requiring athletes to present only their passports and allowing them to compete as men or women. Qualify for the U.S., depending on how their countries classify them.”
But with the revelation that the boxer, who was determined to have male XY chromosomes, had dropped to third place in the AP’s Female Athlete of the Year voting, many people criticized the wire service for including Khalif on social media.
One of the most notable critics of the AP’s choice is tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who took to her Promoted.
But Navratilova wasn’t the only person to express displeasure over the awards situation.
Women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines also criticized the AP’s move, calling it “absurd” and alleging that the AP “knows” Khalif “is a man.”
Many other social media users were equally offended by the AP’s actions:
