Washington, DC – Chris Zahn, President and CEO of the American Chemistry Council (ACC), explained how the group’s more than 150 manufacturers “help create a cleaner future” without being forced by the government with their own set of environmental health and safety standards.
during monday morning policy event given the title Zahn was asked by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lee Zeldin and Breitbart News Washington bureau chief Matthew Boyle about how the chemicals industry was operating “in an environmentally sound way.”
“One, the products we make will help create a cleaner future, but the way we make them will do the same,” the industry leader said.
The ACC has over 150 manufacturers As members produce a wide range of chemical products that Americans use in their daily lives, Jahn argues that “American success depends on American chemistry.”
Examples of environmentally conscious products from member groups include hydrogen and nuclear power, he said.
“believe it or not, [it] To do this requires chemistry. So the products that our members make enable all those clean technologies. Also, the way our members produce has also improved over time,” he added.
Every ACC member is required to adhere to the industry group’s “Responsible Care” program, which requires “third-party audits of our environmental health safety and security protocols,” Jahn explained:
So we’ve got a program we call Responsible Care. Our members are required to comply with that program, and it is a third-party audit of our environmental health, safety and security protocols. And what we do is we collect their metrics on how they perform on those things. We collect it, and we disclose it publicly – not because anyone in government tells us to do so, but because it’s the right thing to do. And I can sit here and tell you that our industry is cleaner and safer than it has ever been.
While the ACC still operates under government regulations, Zahn said the current EPA under the Trump administration is working faster than the Biden administration’s EPA on approving chemicals that will safely benefit the public.
“This is not your grandfather’s chemical industry, and as we move forward, we will get better,” Jahn told the crowd gathered in Washington, DC. “So the way we do it is really important, and what we do with it is equally important.”
