Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim supports India’s plan for a new consulate in Sabah, as a step to deepen bilateral ties and boost economic and cultural ties.
putrajaya: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has agreed to support India’s decision to open a new consulate in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. He said this during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is visiting India.
“As a sign of our good relations, I have agreed to support the decision of the Government of India to open the Consulate General of India in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah,” Anwar said. The two leaders said the mission will strengthen people-to-people ties and promote economic cooperation.
The Consulate is expected to enhance consular services especially in East Malaysia. It will facilitate closer engagement in trade, investment, tourism, education and cultural exchanges.
It will also enhance support for the Indian community and businesses operating in Sabah and the surrounding region. Modi had earlier announced the plan in a post on social media platform X.
“In the coming time, an Indian Consulate will also be opened in Malaysia, bringing our countries even closer,” he posted. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the Consulate will strengthen ongoing cooperation.
It will also expand India’s reach to the Indian community in Malaysia. Modi arrived in Malaysia yesterday on a two-day official visit.
