We are wired to understand the world through story and myth.
In millions of years of evolution, we did not have writing, books, or the Internet. Our ancestors would gather around fires and tell stories and speak in symbols and ideals.
In this way knowledge has been transmitted for thousands of years.
we are like this In fact Learn.
Then why do we view a symbolic subject like astrology through abstract, myth-less concepts?
What if we looked at the natal chart not as an abstract structure, but as a story with a beginning, middle, and end?
Instead of theories and separate keywords, we can see Ascendancy – and everything that flows from it – as one Travel: the journey the planets take as they revolve around the Sun.
Astrology is based on the movement of planets. In their journey around the Sun, the planets move apart, converge, reach their apogee and return.
The natal chart – a snapshot of the planetary positions at the time of birth – shows the planets at particular stages in their relationship, like a freeze-frame of a long film.
But then if we bring life to this picture, if we bring it to life, we start to see the bigger story behind it.
All stories – including the story of our birth chart – follow the same kind of journey, like the steps of a cycle, going through the same stages and in the same sequence.
Joseph Campbell and the Hero’s Journey
Joseph Campbell – inspired by Carl Jung’s concept of individuation – observed that the stories humans tell follow a similar structure.
he called it hero’s journey, A template for understanding the world.
there is a reason for this fairy tales, booksOr movies Follow the Hero’s Journey pattern – This is because it reflects a universal process of change.
Every story – and every horoscope, every planetary cycle – begins with the end of something: the completion of the previous chapter.
In Tarot, this is the Hanged Man. In the natal chart, the 12th house of ends.
And at some point, this suspended energy starts shakingand something from the outside world calls the hero forwardFrom the hanged man to the fool, the 12th house to the Ascendant symbolizes change and a new beginning.
At first, the hero usually rejects the call – unsure or frightened.
But as soon as the hero commits to the journey, help arrives. A mentor arrives, signs appear along the way, or unexpected allies step in.
Ultimately, the hero crosses the threshold and faces the impossible challenge – and after overcoming it, ultimately returns transformed by the experience.
You can recognize these patterns everywhere. From books, stories to your own life.
All stories begin when the hero faces a new challenge – whether it’s breaking a spell, rescuing a princess, or going on a dangerous quest.
In a modern context, this might mean finding a job, building relationships, or recovering from addiction – and then following in the hero’s steps to overcome this challenge.
The framework of the Hero’s Journey is so universal, so timeless, that it connects with each of us, no matter where or how it is applied.
The Hero’s Journey – 12 Stages of Personality
In Campbell’s framework, the Hero’s Journey includes 12 steps. These steps – “from”call for adventure” To “Resolution”- is in line with 12 universal ideals of travel.
In the birth chart, we find a similar structure: 12 symptoms, 12 housesAnd 12 signal-based aspects Planets are formed in their cycles.
early stages is the set – One End Of a chapter in life that, by design, opens the door to a New one.
In astrology, the conjunction marks the beginning of a new cycle between two planets. In the lunar cycle, that is the new moon phase. In the Hero’s Journey outline, this corresponds to call for adventure.
Then the fast moving planet moves to great distances to create semi-sextileIntroduction of a new energy into the cycle – the moment of hesitation, which Campbell calls refuse call.
Soon after, the hero accepts the trip and receives help – the stage Campbell says’supernatural aid‘, which matches sextile aspect.
In myth, it is a mentor, an ally, a tool, a sign. In real life, it could be a conversation, a book, a chance meeting, an opportunity that presents itself at the exact moment you are on the verge of moving on.
After sextile, we have Inauguration Social class. This is when, in the Hero’s Journey, real test Begins – The class is the threshold that the hero crosses to go from the ordinary world to the special world.
The opening class is turn In the Hero’s Journey:
After the opening square, the planets continue in their cycle, and the story continues to unfold in a predictable order.
The hero must face trials, overcome hardships, and ultimately return transformed – a universal process of growth that we all go through in life.
The Hero’s Journey and Planetary Aspects
If we take Campbell 12 stages of the hero’s journeyWe can naturally map them against 12 Zodiac-Based Aspects in a Planetary CycleFrom the conjunction, to the semi-sextile, to the opposition, and then back to the concluding semi-sextile.
Through the lens of the Hero’s Journey, planets and aspects become mere keywords and definitions. they become steps in a developmental arc – Concrete moments in the hero’s journey.
When we look at the planets and the aspects they create through Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey template for understanding the world, everything falls into place:
A sextile is no longer a “soft aspect” but a sign asking to reada sign that wants to be Followed, a breadcrumb that shows the way forward.
Class is no longer just a “hard aspect” – it’s a start, a crossing the threshold Actions where we are asked to leave behind the comforts of the “ordinary world” and step into the “special world.”
Opening aspect vs closing aspect
Ahead, Not all sextiles and all classes are the same.
We have 2 sextiles in a cycle, or the Hero’s Journey, and the sextile we have introduced – supernatural help – has a very different purpose than what we call “”closing sextile” which occurs at the end of the cycle, after the hero has accomplished the goal.
And the first class, which is called inaugural class (similar to the first quarter of the lunar cycle) has a very different goal than closing classWhich is basically the same as the third quarter of the lunar cycle.
This logic can be applied to any aspect of your chart.
If you have a trine, that could be either an initial trine – occurring at the beginning of the cycle – or a closing trine. Different purpose, different energy.
When we look at aspects this way, they suddenly make a lot more sense. Instead of having separate meanings, each aspect becomes part of the natural order of development.
