A Texas man has been arrested for allegedly sending threatening and sexually explicit messages to WNBA star Kaitlynn Clark before she flew to Indianapolis.
Michael Lewis, 55, was arrested and charged with felony stalking after he was found by Indianapolis officers at a local hotel.
A week before his arrest, police questioned Lewis about the messages. Lewis told authorities that the messages were merely imaginary, nothing real and he had no intention of acting on it. He also said he was in Indianapolis on vacation.
Authorities told Lewis to stop sending messages to Clark, but the communications reportedly continued.
According to court documents obtained by TMZ Sports, Clark was not only aware of the stalking messages, but he also adjusted his public appearance schedule due to concerns for his safety.
According to court documents, one message from Lewis read, “Driving by your house 3 times a day…but let’s not refer to the law yet, telling the public not to drive by Gainbridge..aka Catlin Fieldhouse is allowed.”
Another wrote, “I am getting tickets. “I’m sitting behind the bench…and I’m going up…look at me…get Michael settled…you’re stuck in the snow.”
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears praised Clark for “coming forward” with the alleged stalking case and notifying law enforcement about the threats.
“It takes a lot of courage for women to come forward in these cases, which is why many women don’t do it,” Mears said. “By doing so, the victim is setting an example for all women who deserve to live and work in Indy without the threat of sexual violence.”
If convicted, Lewis faces up to six years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.
