Canada planned to recognize a Palestinian kingdom during a United Nations meeting in September, the announcement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Karney on Wednesday.
“We are working ourselves, with others, to preserve the possibility of a two-state solution, not the facts on the ground, death on the ground, settlements on the ground, excluding the ground, to get to this extent, it is not possible,” Carney said.
Carney said the step was subject to commitment to the Palestinian Authority’s reforms, including commitments to improve their rule next year, which Hamas could “play a role”.
Israel criticized Carney’s position, calling it a “reward for Hamas”, which damages the efforts to reach a ceasefire and frees the remaining hostages by the terrorist group after the attack against the Jewish state on 7 October 2023.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said in a statement, “Israel dismissed the statement by the Canadian Prime Minister.” “At this time the change in the position of the Canadian government is a reward for Hamas and damages the efforts to achieve a framework for a ceasefire and release of hostages in Gaza.”
After France, Carney announced that last week it would recognize a Palestinian kingdom and Britain said it would recognize the state in the United Nations that if the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza was not closed until then.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who spoke with Carney ahead of Canada’s announcement, said a Palestinian state would recognize “the possibility of peace in the region.”
Announcements of some Israel’s close colleagues reflect the increasing international resentment over the human crisis in Gaza, increasing more pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government.

“Canada condemns the fact that the Israeli government has allowed a catastrophe in Gaza,” Carney said.
The White House also opposed the decision to recognize a Palestinian state, saying that President Donald Trump agrees with Israel that it would “reward Hamas”.
A White House official said, “As the President said, if he recognizes a Palestinian kingdom, he will reward Hamas, and he does not think he should be rewarded,” said an official of the White House. “So he is not going to do so. President Trump’s attention is being fed to people [in Gaza],
The American Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witchoff is scheduled to visit Israel on Thursday to discuss the situation of Gaza. Trump said that this week he hopes that centers will be set up to feed more people in the area.
