Malaysia’s chicken and egg supplies forecast to remain stable for Ramadan, with government monitoring smuggling and supporting local farmers
Kuala Lumpur: The supply of chicken and eggs in the local market is expected to be adequate and problem-free, especially ahead of Ramadan next month.
Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Sabu said the forecast was based on ministry data showing that the current situation of both commodities is quite stable.
“However, sometimes there are many factors such as smuggling that risk affecting market supply, which is why we want all parties involved and relevant ministries to control this (smuggling) so that this does not happen,” he said during a question-and-answer session at the Dewan Rakyat.
He said that with regard to import of chicken supplies, the ministry will always ensure that it is balanced with local production.
Mohammed was replying to a supplementary question from Kalam Salan (PN-Sabak Burnam) on the plan to ensure stable chicken supply while reducing imports to protect the income of small and medium-scale breeders.
Responding to another supplementary question on helping small breeders facing pressure from the cost of chicken feed, Mohammed said MARDI and the Department of Agriculture have developed alternative raw materials.
These include using palm kernel cake, black soldier fly larvae and the local grain corn as animal feed.
He said so far, 15 companies are involved in the local grain maize planting initiative, with the government providing initial support in finance and logistics.
Responding to a substantive question on strategies to help small breeders transition to closed-house systems, Mohammed said the change considers breeders’ readiness in infrastructure and logistics.
“Until December 2025, 19 financings with a value of RM62.7 million were approved for the livestock subsector, but no subsidies have been provided for the transition to closed-house systems,” he said.
