Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) said the shooting at Brown University was the result of President Donald Trump’s “circuing campaign to increase violence in this country.”
Murphy said, “If you look at states like Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, California, where there are strong laws, we have gun violence rates, murder rates, mass shooting rates that are two to 3 to 4 times lower than in states where gun laws are lax. And many of the weapons that are used for gun crimes in our states come to our states from states where there is a lack of ability for criminals and people with serious mental illness to purchase weapons. So we know that the strong Laws work. Since we passed that bill in 2022, the first bill in 30 years that tightens the nation’s gun laws, gun violence rates and mass shootings have declined in this country, but that’s not surprising because over the last year, President Trump has been engaged in a whirlwind campaign to increase violence in this country. He’s restoring gun rights to criminals and people who have lost the ability to buy guns. Has done Republicans and Democrats supported that 2022 bill, so he has engaged in a very deliberate campaign to try to further increase violence in this country, I think you are unfortunately going to see the results of that on the streets of America.
Host Dana Bash said, “That’s a huge statement. That’s a campaign to make violence more possible.”
Murphy said, “Absolutely. I mean, he’s deliberately restoring gun rights to dangerous people. He’s cutting grants with bipartisan support to try to prevent violence in our cities or to get needed mental health resources to needy families and children. The evidence tells you that when you stop funding mental health, when you stop funding community anti-gun violence programs, when you give gun rights back to dangerous people, So you’re going to have an increase in violence that is known and that is predictable.”
