Senator John Fetterman (D-PA), one of Israel’s strongest supporters in Congress, expressed full support for President Donald Trump’s attacks on Iran as lawmakers reacted to “Operation Epic Fury.”
“Negotiations never worked [with Iran]Fetterman said Fox & Friends Weekend In an appearance on Saturday morning. “Sometimes you have to take action to make peace.”
He was also critical of calls by European leaders to restart negotiations.
“Why can’t we all agree that the Iranian regime must fall?” He said.
He responded to Democrat criticism of the operation, saying, “This is more about the country than the party.”
Earlier, the senator had considered X:
“President Trump has been willing to do whatever is right and necessary to create real peace in the region,” he wrote. “God bless the United States of America, our great Army, and Israel.”
A member of the Homeland Security Committee, the senator remains a bipartisan surprise, as many conservative commentators thought the Pennsylvania politician would be a far-left lawmaker when he runs for office in 2022.
Fetterman has criticized his fellow Democrats on a number of issues and also shocked his own party by supporting the operation that destroyed Iran’s nuclear sites last June.
The support for the President’s action comes as no surprise to Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who has historically supported military solutions to many conflicts abroad.
“As I watch and monitor this historic operation, I am amazed by President Trump’s determination to be a man of peace, but at the end of the day, this is evil’s worst nightmare,” Graham wrote in a series of posts on Twitter Saturday morning. “Very good, Mr. President.”
In another, he posted the presidential announcement of the operation and said, “God bless President Trump, our military, and our allies in Israel.”
Even on Saturday, reactions from current and former MPs continued to come.
Former Vice President Mike Pence, who has been an extraordinary critic of the president since his term ended, expressed his support for X, saying “justice is being served against the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.”
Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY), one of Trump’s longtime Republican critics, continued his outrage about the president, claiming on Twitter that Trump did not seek congressional approval, even though he had a meeting earlier this week with the Gang of Eight, a group of lawmakers who are briefed on highly classified issues and operations, Fox News reported.
“Acts of war unauthorized by Congress,” Massey wrote on the X.
In another post, he wrote, “I oppose this war. This is not ‘America First’.”
A US military operation working closely with Israel is targeting military targets and ballistic missile sites that pose an “immediate threat”, a US official told Fox News chief national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin.
The US military is not targeting Iran’s leadership, but Israel, the official said.
