Weakley County, Tennessee, Sheriff’s Deputy Derrick Bonham was shot and critically injured Friday morning after responding to a call regarding a possible shooting.
A post from the Martin Police Department said officers responded to the call at 2:51 a.m. and Bonham and other deputies assisted.
Deputies “observed an occupied vehicle leaving 821 University St. … at that time the driver opened fire, striking a WCSO deputy.” Bonham was the injured deputy, and he was “taken to Volunteer Community Hospital and later pronounced dead.”
The suspect who fired the shots is a woman. WPSD reported that he fired one shot at Bonham while firing from inside the vehicle, then “allegedly exited his vehicle and fired another shot at Bonham.”
Bonham was a husband and father of three children. Weakley County Sheriff Terry McDade described Bonham as: “The kind of guy you want to hire. He’s never caused any problems. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the kid raise his voice to anyone. We’re devastated to say the least, but that’s nothing compared to what his young family is feeling.”
The suspect who fired the shot is in custody.
