Egyptian authorities shut down a planned nightclub event featuring Jeffrey Epstein and arrested its promoter for lacking an official permit.
cairo: Egyptian authorities have halted a planned nightclub event modeled on the notorious parties of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and arrested its organizer.
The Interior Ministry said the event, promoted as ‘A Day on Epstein Island’, was scheduled for Tuesday and was advertised on social media with free entry for women.
The ministry said the gathering was advertised “without obtaining the necessary permits from the competent authorities”.
Authorities released blurry photos of the detained organizer and a publicity flyer.
When contacted by AFP using a number on the flyer, the nightclub insisted it had no connection to the incident.
One of the three DJs listed on promotional material also denied any involvement.
The controversy escalated when a video circulated online in which a women’s rights activist was expressing her displeasure over the topic.
He called the incident inappropriate given Epstein’s criminal history.
Epstein died by suicide in a US prison in August 2019.
He is back in the news after 2.8 gigabytes of documents related to his case were released online.
The documents include interrogation recordings, flight logs and court files.
They take a fresh look at his networks, citing European royals, diplomats and former heads of state.
Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to procuring a minor for prostitution.
