Former British Ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson, who was removed from his post after his affair with Jeffrey Epstein emerged, was arrested in England on Monday on suspicion of misconduct in public office, officials said.
London’s Metropolitan Police said that “officers have arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office at an address in north London” and have taken him to a police station for interview.
In keeping with British police practice, police did not release Mandelson’s name, but the suspect in the case has previously been identified as Mandelson.
Mandelson was removed from his diplomatic post in September after material revealing his relationship with Epstein was publicized.
Britain’s Prime Minister Starmer faced a rebellion in the party amid demands for his resignation after the reaction over the appointment related to Epstein.

Documents cited in the Fox News Digital report show that Mandelson maintained contact with Epstein after he was convicted of sex crimes involving minors in 2008, and that Epstein transferred approximately $75,000 to accounts linked to Mandelson or her husband in 2003 and 2004.
Police launched a criminal investigation after more details emerged in documents released by the US Justice Department last month.

Police are investigating Mandelson based on documents that show he passed sensitive government information to Epstein a decade and a half ago. There is no allegation of sexual misconduct against him.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s decision to appoint Mandelson has resulted in the most serious crisis of his prime ministership.
