MUMBAI: A large fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela, a Hindu religious festival, in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, but the fire was quickly brought under control and no injuries were reported, officials said.
District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mander told reporters that the fire spread to at least 10 tents being used to host the fair before the fire was brought under control by emergency teams.
“Today at 4.30 pm, we received information about the fire… Fire brigade, police teams and event teams reached the spot,” he said, adding that the situation at the event is now normal.
The six-week-long Maha Kumbh Mela, or Great Pitcher Festival, began in India last Monday, and is considered the largest gathering of humanity in the world.
More than 400 million people are expected to flock to the city of Prayagraj over the course of six weeks to take a dip at the confluence of three holy rivers – Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical, invisible Saraswati.
