Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has left the Democratic Party over her “terrible” treatment of former President Joe Biden.
During the 2024 presidential election, Joe Biden successfully secured his party’s nomination, but later withdrew his candidacy after the Democrat leadership insisted that he drop out due to his age and possible cognitive issues. Democrats based it on Biden’s poor debate performance against Trump that summer, during which he appeared slow and confused at times. After dropping out, Biden’s then-Vice President Kamala Harris secured her party’s nomination despite having no primary race before losing in a landslide to President Donald Trump in November.
In an excerpt from her new memoir, Karine Jean-Pierre said the treatment she received from Biden drove her away from the Democratic Party, describing herself as now an independent person.
Jean-Pierre wrote, “Biden seemed completely satisfied with his decision, but I was stunned, my emotions were blurred. I was angry and sad. I was angry and sad that this man had given more than 50 years of his life to serving the American people, and in the end he was treated poorly by members of his own party. It was terrible.”
The former press secretary also believed that Biden would remain in office until he ultimately dropped out of the race.
Jean-Pierre wrote, “The Democratic Party had defined my life, my career.” “Everything I did was tied to improving people’s lives. The party was the vehicle that allowed me to not only get a front-row seat to history, but to do things first.” [Barack] in his administration following Obama’s presidential campaign, but also making some history for herself as the first black woman and openly gay person to become White House press secretary. I had never thought of leaving the party till now.
Karin Jean-Pierre ultimately decided to become independent so that she could stick to her principles without giving blind loyalty to a party she felt had betrayed her.
She wrote, “Now the cloud of anxiety hanging over me turned into thoughts about how I could possibly do something different. How could I turn my frustration into some concrete action that would allow me to fight for what I believed I was no longer entitled to, without giving blind loyalty to a party.”
She said, “You know what? I’m going to become an independent. I don’t think I can afford to be in the Democratic Party anymore.”
