A Georgia woman is recovering from serious injuries after she was sprayed with a corrosive chemical during an evening walk in Savannah, authorities and family members say.
Ashley Wasilewski, 46, was attacked while walking near Forsyth Park on Wednesday night around 8:15 p.m. According to Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, an unknown assailant approached him and suddenly threw a substance at him.
“This type of violence has no place in Savannah,” Johnson said in a statement. “Our police department is handling this matter with the utmost urgency.”

Wasilewski is currently being treated for second and third degree burns on approximately half of his body. They covered his scalp, face, hands and feet, his son Westley Wasilewski told The Associated Press.
“We don’t know who did it,” Westley Wasilewski said. “She has no enemies. She is everyone’s friend.”
Ashley Wasilewski was walking in the park after attending a church Christmas program when she said she saw a shadow approaching from behind.
As soon as she turned, the man threw liquid over her head, according to her friend Connor Milam, the AP reports.
