NGSO systems fuel explosive growth as satellite connectivity becomes mission-critical for modern defense operations
Paris, France [October, 2025] , Novaspace has released the first edition of its Satellite Communications for Defense and Security report, highlighting the dramatic change underway in military satcom markets globally as NGSO services become the backbone of the sector’s growth. NGSO service revenues are poised to see 25%+ CAGR across the decade, reaching $8.1 billion by 2034.
In 2024, government activity (except Russia and China) generated combined satcom demand of approximately 300 Gbps, divided between 250 Gbps in the commercial band and more than 50 Gbps in the military band. This demand was supported by both the GEO and NGSO systems, with total commercial service revenues exceeding $2 billion, of which GEO services contributed $1.5 billion. Meanwhile, NGSO revenues have increased by $90 million in 2020, signaling a major change in market dynamics.
“Driven by rising global tensions and defense modernization, the growing demand for military satellite communications now marks a transformational change in how defense forces connect, operate and project power,” says Santiago Pérez, senior manager at Novaspace. “Satellite connectivity is no longer a support function, it is becoming a strategic enabler of modern defense operations.”
Looking to the future, Novaspace forecasts a 26% CAGR in defense satcom demand. Service revenues are projected to grow significantly, with commercial revenues exceeding $8.6 billion by 2034 (15% CAGR). NGSO service revenue alone is expected to reach $8.1 billion, growing at a 25%+ CAGR, while GEO revenue is projected to fall to $515 million. However, GEO demand will remain relatively stable in volume, supporting diversified operations outside the US and Europe, often supported by national operators.
Overall, the United States will dominate the defense satcom market by 2034 with more than 90% of demand and 93% of revenue. Industry stakeholders must plan for this growth even as global opportunities are growing. Satellite constellations are rapidly becoming mission-critical infrastructure for defense forces, changing the way operations are planned, executed and connected. As demand increases and NGSO systems take center stage, industry players have a clear opportunity to rethink their strategies, align with new defense priorities, enter high-growth sectors and gain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving communications landscape.
