On Thursday’s broadcast of “CNN News Central,” Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) argued that it would be detrimental to law and order if cities had their own public safety funding. Donald Trump has said this and also said that no funding should be given to any city.
“What place does the Congressman have,” co-host Boris Sanchez asked, “to stop funding from being offered to New York and other sanctuary cities, as the President is vowing to do if they don’t go along with mass deportations.” so they can?”
Espaillat responded, “Well, I am an appropriator. I sit on the Appropriations Committee, and we’ll go through all the funding possibilities. And, at that juncture, we will see what their efforts will be. To cut funding of any kind to any city, I think, is a mistake. Cities deserve public safety. You can’t cut funding to public safety because of this and allow … over 1,500 violent criminals, felons, to be released into our communities, as the President did. This is just contradictory. And if the Republican Party is the party of law and order, that is a serious mistake. ,
