Iran has asked for a ceasefire, President Donald Trump revealed on Wednesday, hours before his scheduled address to the nation on Operation Epic Fury in Iran.
Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post Wednesday morning, writing, “The President of the new regime of Iran, who is far less radical and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has called for a ceasefire with the United States of America!”
However, Trump said the US would consider a ceasefire once the Strait of Hormuz was “open, free and clear”.
“Until then, we are sending Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Age!!!” he added, signing the statement with “President DJT.”
Trump’s update came just hours before his address to the nation regarding an “important update” on the Iran war. According to White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt, the address is expected to begin at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
It also comes as Trump urges other countries to buy oil from the US and show courage and go into the strait and “just take” their jet fuel.
“All those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to join in the beheading of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: No. 1, buy from America, we have plenty of it, and No. 2, muster up the courage to delay some, go to the Strait, and just take over,” Trump urged, warning them that they need to “start learning how to fight for themselves” because “the United The States won’t be there to help you” now, just like you weren’t there for us.
He added, “Iran has been basically destroyed. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!”
On Tuesday, Trump told CBS News’ Weijia Jiang that the operation is actually “two weeks ahead of schedule,” adding that the U.S. wants to “clean up some of the ends.”
Trump continued, “We have had a complete regime change. These are different people that no one has ever heard of before and, frankly, they have been more reasonable. So, we have had a complete regime change beyond anyone’s imagination. That’s a big factor.”
The President has said that the operation will end within a few weeks.
