A man was arrested after the statue of late United Kingdom Prime Minister Winston Churchill in London was defaced with red graffiti, the Metropolitan Police reported in a post on Twitter.
The photographs depicted the statue and its base being defaced and carrying slogans such as “Never again”, “Zionist war criminal” and “Globalize the intifada!” Like the messages are written.
“Overnight, the statue of Winston Churchill in Parliament Square was painted red,” police wrote in a post Friday.

Police said, “Officers were on the scene within two minutes of receiving the alert just after 4am. A 38-year-old man has been detained on suspicion of aggravated criminal damage by racially aggravated assault.”
A Dutch activist group claimed credit for the graffiti.

A post on Instagram claimed, “On the morning of February 27, the statue of Winston Churchill on Parliament Square was defaced with red paint. This protest was organized and executed by @freethefilton24nl.”
The post contains a pre-recorded statement in which a man says, “My name is Olaix Outis. I am a citizen of the Netherlands.”
