Médecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), commonly known as Doctors Without Borders, suspended non-critical medical operations at Gaza’s Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, citing security concerns.
MSF said it took the decision on 20 January due to concerns about the management of the hospital and a pattern of unacceptable incidents within the complex.
The suspension was not widely reported at the time, and it was not immediately clear when the decision was first posted publicly.
MSF’s FAQ page, where the update appears, shows it was last modified on February 11.

In recent months, the international medical humanitarian aid group said staff and patients have reported the presence of armed and sometimes masked men, threats, arbitrary arrests of patients, and suspicious movement of weapons on hospital grounds.
“While none of these incidents occurred in parts of the hospital premises where MSF works, they pose a serious security risk to our teams and patients,” MSF wrote on its website.
The group added, “MSF formally expressed its strong concerns to the relevant authorities and stressed the incompatibility of such violations with our medical mission. Hospitals must remain neutral, civilian space, free from military presence or activity, to ensure the safe and impartial delivery of medical care.” “MSF calls on all armed groups, Hamas and Israeli forces to respect medical facilities and ensure the protection of civilians.”

In a statement released on Saturday, Nasser Hospital rejected MSF’s “false, baseless and misleading allegations” regarding the presence of weapons or armed groups inside the facility.
It said, “These allegations are factually incorrect, irresponsible and pose a serious threat to protected civilian medical facilities. The Gaza Strip is in a state of extreme and prolonged emergency as a result of systematic attacks on civilian institutions.” “Under these circumstances, there have been isolated unlawful actions by unruly individuals and groups throughout society, including attempts by some people to carry weapons.”
Hospital officials said that civilian police presence had been arranged to help protect patients, staff and infrastructure and called on MSF to withdraw its claims and reaffirm its commitment to medical neutrality.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Sunday it had intelligence indicating that Hamas is using the Nasser hospital as a headquarters and military outpost, reiterating long-standing allegations that the terrorist group conducts operations within civilian facilities in Gaza.

It reads, “For more than two years, the IDF and the defense establishment have warned about the reprehensible use of hospitals and humanitarian shelters by terrorist organizations in Gaza as human shields to conceal terrorist activities.”
Hamas has previously denied using hospitals or other civilian facilities for military purposes.
