Reddit founder uses AI to get one last hug from his mom

On Sunday, Alexis Ohanian posted a photo and short video on X, and less than 36 hours later, the post viewed 20.4 million times in the post.

This picture was nutritious – one of Ohanian’s favorite photos of his late mother. In the photo, his mother hugs a young Ohanian in a warm neck because he sits in a sunshine mountain meadow. That smiling boy will grow up and be one of the co-founders of Reddit, the husband of Serena Williams, and a parent herself. The picture is innocent on its own.

However, this is the video that attracted the attention of the Internet.

Using the new Midzorney AI video generator, Ohanian created a short video clip, which animates the photo, bringing her mother to life in a new way. The pair smiles as a woman and hugs the young Ohanian and paves her forward.

Many reactions were positive, with users sharing how they touched by video and Ohanian’s message. In his post, Tech Entrepreneur wrote, “Hey, I was not ready for how it would feel. We did not have a camcorder, so I have no video with my mother … This is how he hugged me. I have started it again 50 times.”

And in a follow-up post, he clarified, “I lost my mother about 20 years ago. The trolls have assured that I am sufficiently unhappy.
