Washington – The US Space Force has ordered two additional global status system satellites from Lockheed Martin. The $ 509.7 million contracts include GPS III satellites 21 and 22, which are part of the advanced GPS III follow-on Nakshatra designed to provide increased status, navigation and time services to both civil and military users worldwide.
According to a contract announcement on May 28, delivery of two satellites is determined by 2031.
The order allows up to 22 spacecraft which was placed under an existing 2018 contract. With this purchase, space force has now used options for 12 satellites, causing the total value of the contract to $ 4.1 billion.
The GPS IIIF series represents the latest upgradation of the global positioning system, providing essential geolocation services to more than 6 billion users worldwide, including military, commercial and civil users.
The new IIF satellites offered increased anti-co-collecting capabilities, better accuracy, and additional features such as an advanced nuclear detection detection payload and the search-and-rescue package of the next generation.
