Spanish court ends investigation into Julio Iglesias over sexual assault claims, citing lack of jurisdiction due to the alleged crimes taking place abroad.
madrid: The Spanish judiciary has ended its investigation against singer Julio Iglesias due to lack of jurisdiction.
A spokesman for the National Court Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the decision on Friday following reports in local media.
The proceedings were initiated after two former employees accused the 82-year-old singer of sexual harassment and violence.
Both women worked in Iglesias’ homes in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.
The singer had vehemently denied the allegations and had requested for the case to be dismissed.
The prosecutor’s office argued that Spanish courts are not authorized to investigate the alleged incidents.
Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reported that the alleged crimes were not committed in Spain.
It said neither the plaintiff nor the accused reside in the country.
It was not immediately clear whether the two women would face legal action in the countries where the alleged crimes occurred.
The allegations were published last Tuesday by the online Spanish newspaper El Diario and the US channel Univision Noticias.
The reports follow a joint three-year investigation into the alleged incidents.
They are said to have taken place in 2021 at villas in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic and Lifford Cay, Bahamas.
In recent years, Iglesias has largely retreated from the international spotlight.
The Madrid native has been living in seclusion in the Caribbean and avoiding public appearances since 2019.
