Teachers tackled a grizzly bear that attacked a school group walking on a trail in British Columbia, Canada, on Thursday, officials said.
“The group had stopped at a trail near the community when a brown bear came out of the forest and attacked,” the inspector said. Kevin Van Damme of British Columbia’s Conservation Officer Service said in an update on social media. “Teachers successfully repelled the bear using pepper spray and bear bangers.”
Eleven people were injured in the attack, including fourth and fifth grade students, according to CBC News.
British Columbia Health Services said two were in critical condition, two were in critical condition and the other seven were treated at the scene.

This incident occurred in the city of Bella Coola, located 400 miles north of Vancouver.
Van Damme said the victims were taken to Bella Coola Hospital and are being transferred to Vancouver for further care.
Authorities were still searching for the bear as of Friday, believing he may have been injured earlier.

Van Damme said, “We recognize that this incident is tragic for the community. We are in close contact with the Nuxalk Nation as our investigation continues. We thank them for their collaborative efforts to ensure community awareness and shared safety information.” “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.”

According to the Guardian, British Columbia’s Environment and Parks Minister Tamara Davidson called the teachers who fought the bears “true heroes”, and said they were well prepared.
