Dhaka: The European Union (EU) is providing € 68 million (US $ 70.9 million) this year for Rohingya response, the Bangladesh Transitional Government announced on Monday.
According to Anadolu Ajsi, funding will support the host communities in Bangladesh as well as people affected by violence in the western Rakhin state of Myanmar, the government said in a statement after Muhammad Yunus, the head of the transitional government, said in a statement after visiting the European Union Commissioner Hadja Lahbib in Dhaka.
Financial assistance was announced amidst a serious funding crisis for the persecuted Myanmar National.
Equality, preparation and crisis management for the Commissioner of European Union said that while the amount is more than the previous year’s early European Union’s contribution, it is still insufficient to prevent a significant decline of human condition in camps.
Bangladesh is hosting more than 1.2 million Rohingya in the market district of South East Cox as he fled a military crack in Myanmar in 2017.
Yunus reiterated his government’s commitment to address the Rohingya humanitarian crisis, describing it as a “big issue” for Bangladesh.
“This has been going on for many years without any solution,” he said.
“United Nations General Secretary is coming. We are trying to draw international attention to the Rohingya crisis, ”Yunus said.
United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres is to visit Bangladesh from 13 to 16 March.
Meanwhile, the UN coordinator in Bangladesh, Gin Lewis, expressed a similar concern about the funding crisis for Rohingya when he met Younus on Sunday. “We are very worried about the money situation,” he said.
