Brucells: European Commission Chairman Ursula von Der Leyen has urged Ukrainian President Volodimier Zelanski to maintain the freedom of anti -corruption institutions after recent stress over his effort to limit his authority.
Von Der Leyen described his discussions with Zelancesi as producers, acknowledging Ukraine’s progress towards European integration. “It should build on these solid foundations and preserve independent anti -corruption bodies, which are corners of Ukraine’s law,” he said in a post on X.
Last week, the Ukraine’s Parliament voted for snatching two anti-corruption agencies of their autonomy, which led to widespread criticism. The European Union labeled the decision a “severe step back”, warning that it could allow political intervention in corruption cases. Von Der Leyen personally demanded clarification from Zelancesi, marked a rare public rebuke from Brussels.
Facing opposition to Kiev, Zelancesi reversed the course, promising new laws to strengthen the freedom of agencies. The European Union welcomed the move, reiterating its commitment to Ukraine’s anti -corruption reforms. “Ukraine may rely on our support to progress on his European path,” von dera Leyen confirmed. – AFP
