Istanbul: Turkish prosecutor is demanding at least five years prison for political commentator Fatih Altayali, who faces allegations of threatening President Recep Taip Erdogan.
The case highlighted by Rights Group MLSA stems from Altayli’s comments on its YouTube show, where he mentioned the historic Turk Sultans, who was murdered or strangled to strangled to discuss public opposition to Erdogan’s long law.
Altayli, arrested on 22 June and was held at a provisional detention near Istanbul, hosts a popular daily show with 1.5 million Youtube customers and 2.8 million followers on X.. Prosecutors alleged that his comments “threatened an attack on Erdogan’s life”, as presented in court.
The journalist denied the allegations, stating that his comment provided “elements of historical reference” without the intention of threatening Erdogan. However, the prosecutors argue that the video was widely aired, the “intention of communicating” was performed.
Turkey ranked 159th of 180 countries among reporters without the Borders Press Freedom Index behind Pavistan and Venezuela. Erdogan, who served as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2014 before becoming President, is constitutionally barred from demanding a fourth term in 2028. However, there is speculation that he may pursue early elections or constitutional changes to expand his rule. – AFP
