Representatives of Ukraine and the US are reportedly to meet ahead of high-level trilateral talks in Geneva, which will also be attended by Russian envoys. Reports about the meeting come just as the Russia-Ukraine war entered its fifth year.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters about Thursday’s US-Ukraine meeting, the Associated Press reports. According to the AP, the Ukrainian leader reportedly said Thursday’s meeting would focus on the possibility of a post-war recovery for Ukraine as well as preparation for an upcoming trilateral meeting with Russia.
The meeting is expected to include Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustam Umerov, US special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, according to the AP, which cited Zelensky. Additionally, Umerov’s press secretary Diana Davityan told the AP that the meeting will take place in Geneva. The Swiss city is also expected to be the site of US-Iran nuclear talks on the same day as the trilateral talks, the outlet reported.

Zelensky said he had tasked Umerov with discussing a possible prisoner exchange, the AP reported. He said Ukraine would like talks with Russia to take place next week.
The Trump administration’s effort to end the years-long war has brought Russian and Ukrainian envoys to the table in both Abu Dhabi and Geneva, though the meetings have yet to yield any breakthroughs for peace.

Putin pushes ahead with ‘nuclear triumvirate’, Zelensky claims ‘World War 3’ underway
Last week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Twitter that he had met with Zelensky and discussed “Ukraine’s security and deep defense and economic partnership.”
“President Trump wants a solution that ends the bloodshed once and for all,” Rubio wrote.
Additionally, last week, Zelensky said he spoke with Witkoff and Kushner ahead of the trilateral meetings in Geneva, which he said the Ukrainian government expected to be “really productive.”
Zelensky wrote on Twitter, “We also discussed some developments following the meetings in Abu Dhabi. Not everything can be shared over the phone, and our negotiation team will present Ukraine’s position next week. I also talked about our meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. We greatly appreciate that the US continues to take a constructive approach and is ready to assist in protecting life.” I thank President Trump, his team, and the people of the United States for their support.

On Tuesday, which marked the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Zelensky firmly said Putin had not defeated Ukraine or broken the spirit of the country. The statement came as the Ukrainian military made its biggest advance since 2024, according to the AP, which cited the Institute for the Study of War. The institute said Ukrainian forces had pushed back Russian forces at front-line points in the eastern regions of the country.
