American and Syrian forces of the US-led coalition fighting the Islamic State militant group in Syria came under fire on Saturday, reports said.
Two local Syrian officials told Reuters the convoy was targeted while on patrol in the central city of Palmyra, resulting in several casualties.
The War Department told Fox News Digital that “we are aware of the reports,” but added that it had “nothing additional to offer at this time.”
“The United States, the CIA, and military forces are reportedly deeply involved in securing and stabilizing the situation in Syria,” Dan Dicker, president of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, recently told Fox News Digital.

As of June, the US had about 1,500 troops left in Syria after the Pentagon ordered withdrawal and consolidation, and that number was expected to drop to only several hundred by the end of the year, according to Fox News chief national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin.

Griffin said the US had eight bases in Syria to monitor ISIS since US forces left in 2014 to prevent the terrorist group from establishing a caliphate, although three of those bases have been closed or handed over to the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The celebrations came a year after former Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad fled the capital after rebel forces launched a massive offensive across the country, ending five decades of rule by the Assad family and opening a new chapter in Syria’s history.
