Elon Garber, president of Harvard University, said “NBC Nightley News” on Wednesday that the school was sueing the Trump administration as it would not compromise to maintain $ 2.2 billion in the grant.
Garber said, “The indication that they are giving is that they want to review directly on whom we rented on our faculty. For this it is implicated what kind of ideas can be expressed in the campus. They want to tell us who we need to set fire and they also want to interfere in their admission processes.
Host Lester Holt said, “You are taking the most powerful man in the world.”
Garber said, “We are defending that I believe that American economy and methods of life are one of the most important lynchpins of our universities.”
Holt said, “How much pain can Harvard absorb here?”
Garber said, “We don’t know how much we can really absorb, but what we know is that we cannot compromise on basic principles such as protecting our first amendment rights.”
Holt said, “Is this a fight that you can win?”
Garber said. “I don’t know the answer to this question, but the bets are so high that we have no choice.”
