Two trains collided in Denmark early Thursday, leaving five people seriously injured, in what police described as a major incident.
The collision occurred around 6:30 a.m. near Hillerød, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) north of Copenhagen. About a dozen other people suffered minor injuries, according to the Greater Copenhagen Fire Department.
According to a North Zealand Police spokesperson, 38 people were on board the two trains.

Authorities originally said four people were seriously injured, but revised that figure hours after the crash. It was not immediately clear whether the train’s driver was among the victims.

Investigators are investigating what caused the collision, which happened near a level crossing. Photographs from the scene show that the front sections of the train were damaged, although both remained upright on the tracks.
Trine Egetved, mayor of the nearby town of Gribskov, said in a post on Facebook that some of the injured had been taken to hospital.

He said the accident occurred on a local rail line that is used by many of Gribskov’s residents, employees and schoolchildren.
