According to a joint statement issued on June 6, 2025, 31 bitcoin core developers have taken a clear stand on how the network should handle non-modern uses. He insisted that his role is not to support or block data inscriptions and other non-financial activities.
The move has shaken strong sentiments throughout the community, which has debated the great objective of freedom, fees and bitcoins.
Developer stance on data policies
Based on the reports, the core team stated that they would not take steps to prevent “harmless” data from entering the blockchain. He said that the main strength of bitcoin is its resistance to sensorship. So, software options operated by any user should be erected.

They made it plain: It depends on the node operators what they accept. The purpose of this approach is to keep the network free, even if it means that it carries additional data.
Community voices divided
After the statement, the reactions were inserted. JAN3 CEO Samson Mow called the developers Tone Holll and said that recent changes “opened the floodgets” for spam. He argued that unwanted data is encouraged by removing technical obstacles.
Bitcoin core gods have gradually replaced the network to enable spam and now also focused on removing obstacles for spammers. It is just inconsistent to say that “this is what is now, it is very bad.”
This statement is also unfair. The core looks like a Nya from the gods. https://t.co/ACIQYVK12F

On the other hand, Jameson Lop of Casa praised the clear interpretation of the relay rules. Lop said that a unified voice of developers helps in cutting the previous confusion on the policy.
Recently upgrade spark worries
On May 8, 2025, core developers removed a long -running border on the transaction data size. This twice allows anyone to include a large part of the information in the transaction. Critics are worried that it will increase blockchain blot and push the fees more.
Supporters say that it is important to run the bitcoin smoothly by predicting what the miners will be included – and passing that information. They claim that this neutral relay policy helps miners and users equally, even if not everyone buys it.
Future thorns and layer solutions
Looking forward, some feel that a new fork can divide a “pure money” chain that blocks the data inscription. Others carry layer -2 networks or sidechen on heavy lifting for art, messages and other uses.
Either way, most of them agree that the wallet and node software will soon provide options: one for clean, finance-level transactions, and the other for those who do not consider additional data bad. This option will vote with their settings instead of relying on developers to call users.
