The bombing is the latest attack in the region, with more than two dozen incidents reported in southwestern Colombia in the past three days. The region is home to illegal armed groups that vie for sea and river access routes to control coca leaf cultivation areas and run drug trafficking operations into Central America and Europe.
General Hugo López, commander of the Armed Forces of Colombia, described the incident as a “terrorist act”. They blamed a man named “Iván Mordisco”, one of Colombia’s most wanted men, and the network of the Jaime Martínez faction. Both are dissidents of the now-defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia who operate in the region.
