Despite the Prime Minister’s call for government agencies to abstain, Penang will proceed in a restrained manner with its Adelphitri Open House, citing tradition and people’s engagement.
George Town: The Penang state government will go ahead with its Adelphitri Open House, albeit in a restrained manner.
The decision comes despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently calling on ministries, agencies and government-linked companies to refrain from hosting such events as a cost-saving measure.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the state had not yet received any official circular from the Chief Secretary to the Government regarding the directive.
He informed that preparations for the event are already advanced and invitations have also been issued.
“The State Executive Council has also not had the opportunity to formally discuss the matter,” Chou told reporters.
He stressed that the open house jointly organized with the Governor of Penang is a tradition of connecting with the people.
“It has always been conducted with restraint, not extravagantly,” he said.
For ceremonies at the State Department and agency level, Chow advised holding internal or potluck gatherings to reduce costs.
He stressed the importance of such forums in strengthening ethnic unity.
“Under uncertain economic circumstances, such small-scale gatherings provide a space for the public to come together and celebrate solidarity,” Chow said.
He warned against attempts by extremist groups to create divisions within the society
