General Motors has announced a plan to manufacture gas-operated vehicles and SUVs as well as construction of pickup trucks in Michigan.
The Detroit-based auto manufacturer said in a statement on Tuesday that he would “start production of Cadilac Escalade, as well as in the beginning of 2027, she will help to meet strong customer demand to help continuing the sheaveraded silverlado and GMC Sierra light duty pickup in Orion Assembly in the beginning of 2027.”
According to CNBC, Escalade is produced in Arlington, Texas, while Silverrado and Sierra trucks are built at an assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which will continue to produce vehicles.
The move creates GM’s plans to invest $ 4 billion in US facilities, which was declared by the automaker in June. Following this announcement, President Donald Trump implemented 25% tariffs on imported vehicles earlier this year and 25% duties on several auto parts imported in the US.
It also makes the gas-powered vehicle production of the automaker.
The Orion Assembly plant, which is being repaired for gas products, was expected to be a second electric vehicle-exclusive plant in the US.
GM CEO Mary Barra said in 2021 that the company will offer EVS by 2023 citing carbon emissions.
“For normal motors, our most important carbon effect comes from telpipe emissions of vehicles that we sell – in our case, it is 75 percent,” Barra said that time. “This is why it is so important that we move towards a future in which whatever vehicle we sell is a zero-vigorous vehicle.”
Barra further depicted the 2035 EV target as “aspiration”.
GM Chief Stability Officer, Den Parker predicted that going to EVS would be a successful business model.
“We think it’s going to be a successful business model,” he said in 2021. “We know that there are obstacles, we know that there are technology challenges, but we are confident that we will overcome those challenges with the resources we have and the expertise we have and it will be a business model that we will be able to flourish in the future.”
While GM has recently seen an increase in EV sales, the overall customer demand for EVS has not met expectations.
“Over the years, the motor vehicle industry has been in a state of enthusiasts. Vehicle manufacturers excluded the optimistic sales forecast for electric models and announced ambitious goals for EV development. Wall Street equally evaluated the Legacy Automkers and Startup entries, which is based on their philosophy for an EV future,” CNBC stated.
“Publicity is now decreasing, and companies are again happy to consumer’s choice. Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Jaguar Land Rover and Eston Martin are delaying their electric vehicle plans from Ford Motor and General Motors.
