Tokyo: Japan’s top tariff negotiator Riii Akajwa said that he plans to visit Washington from Tuesday to signed an executive order to make the United States a 15% tariff rate effective by President Donald Trump to the United States.
The US agreed last month to reduce the existing tariff on Japanese automobile imports in a trade deal with Japan, which was 15% from the total levy 27.5% earlier. The duties coming on other Japanese goods will also be cut from 25% to 15%.
“We will push the United States to ensure that an executive order is signed on tariffs agreed on automobiles and automotive components as soon as possible,” Akajwa told Parliament.
Referring to the problem of “stacking”, where the goods could be affected by several tariffs, Akajwa also said that Japan wants to ensure that the goods that have already been planted at more than 15% will be exempted from an additional 15% rate. – Reuters
