In Openai The developer conference in San Francisco on Monday, CEO Sam Altman and former-Aptal designer Joni Ive spoke in vague words about “family of equipment” which are working to develop the pair in the present.
“As the phones and computers are great, there is something new to do,” Altman said on stage with IVE. The two confirmed that Openai is working on more than one hardware product, but from the fine details, from the use of cases to the specifications, wrapped.
“Hardware is difficult. It is difficult to detect new computing form factors,” Altman said in a media briefing first briefing. “I think we have a chance to do something amazing, but it will take some time.”
Ive said that his team has generated “15 to 20 actually a really compelling product” ideas to find the right type of hardware to focus on the company’s efforts.
“I don’t think at this time we have an easy relationship with our technology,” Ive said. “Instead of looking at AI as an extension of those challenges, I see it very differently.” IVE explained that one of the reasons he wanted to design an AI-operated device with OpenIAI, changing the relationships that are currently in devices they use every day.
While IVE accepted the ability to promote productivity for AI, efficiency is not its main goal with these devices. Rather, he expects them to do more social good in the world. The devices should “please, and complete, and be more peaceful, and less concerned, and less disconnected,” he said.
Earlier reporting had indicated that Openai is planning to construct a new category of hardware which is not available from phone or laptop. According to the Wall Street Journal, in the recent preview of openiAI employees, Ultman indicated that the product would be aware of the user’s environment and day-to-day experiences. The device can be screenless and can rely on input from cameras and microphones.
According to the Financial Times, OpenI has also not publicly called it when it is planning to launch devices, although the target may be launched at the end of 2026. Publication recently stated that the development of the device has been affected by technical issues.
