Transport Minister Anthony Locke says enforcement against overloaded lorries is ongoing, with a major operation in 2026 finding more than 3,500 violations.
putrajaya: Transport Minister Anthony Locke has warned that enforcement against overloaded heavy vehicles is an ongoing, year-round effort and not a seasonal campaign.
He stressed that industry players must fully comply with the law or face strict action, refuting notions that a big operation has come to an end.
“Last year, we ran large-scale campaigns against overloading and they had a significant impact,” Locke said in his 2026 New Year address.
“However, some parties assumed that enforcement ended last December. Therefore, I want to make it clear that enforcement activities continue at all times.”
Operation Perang Lebih Muatan, held from Oct 14 to Dec 31 last year, inspected 169,965 heavy vehicles.
A total of 3,563 vehicles were found overloaded during that operation.
Authorities issued 6,843 notices to drivers and vehicle owners along with 4,983 summonses under the Road Transport Act 1987.
Locke warned industry players against prioritizing profits over load limits.
“If violations are found, strict action will be taken. Do not assume that enforcement has been stopped or relaxed,” he said.
He said that this year the Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement will also strongly emphasize on overall road safety.
This includes tackling drunk driving, illegal street racing and improving motorcyclist safety.
Locke said, “Enforcement is not just about heavy lorries. The protection of drunk drivers, illegal racers and motorcyclists should also be seriously addressed and strengthened.”
The purpose of continued enforcement is to ensure safe roads for the public and demonstrate the Government’s commitment to transport law.
