EX-FOFC champion Connor McGregor has suggested the construction of a national reserve bitcoin in Ireland. He said in a message posted on X on May 9, 2025 that doing so will “get people’s money back.” He is contesting from the presidency as an independent candidate and wants to focus on the crypto policy.
McGregor’s bitcoin proposal
In his blog post, Ireland should have a reserve of bitcoin in a strategic reserve. He did not specify where the funding would be generated or how much it would cost. He only said that a reserve would put power in the hands of common citizens. He further mentioned that “Crypto at its core was established to give strength to people.” This phrase is echoed with a lot of bitcoin and very base of decentralization.

Counting Crypto leaders
According to reports, McGregor invited experts to cooperate with them. He tagged the host of Anthony Pampomiano, Pompe Podcast, and requested the response. He also approached David Bailey, an expert who consulted former US President Donald Trump on Crypto issues. In his reactions, McGregor said, “Messages talk to me and in my place” and “David message me, let’s talk about your thoughts!” His idea is to organize an X space session to develop details.
Political and legal challenges
Ireland needs to hold its next presidential election by November 11, 2025, when President Michael D. Higgins’ term ended. Any initiative to establish a bitcoin reserve will require support from MPs and Central Bank. Ireland is a member of the European Union, so its monetary policy is related to the Euro. A small party candidate who is independent has a thin possibility to get an alliance for this notion.
