Penang police have crippled a drug syndicate by arresting two men and seizing MDMA powder worth RM1 million in a Bukit Mertajam raid.
george town: Police have dismantled a drug distribution syndicate and seized methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) powder worth RM1 million.
Two people were arrested in separate raids conducted by the Penang Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department in Bukit Mertajam.
In the first raid, a man was arrested from the parking lot, where a brown box was found in his vehicle.
Inside were 271 packets of powder in various brands and colors, believed to be MDMA and weighing an estimated 6,155 grams.
After initial custody, the police arrested the suspect’s associate from a nearby area.
Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said intelligence revealed the syndicate had been active since last October.
He said the total quantity of drugs seized could have been used by 50,000 people.
Urine tests revealed that both suspects tested positive for ketamine.
The investigation also revealed that both men had previous criminal and drug-related records.
The suspects, aged 33 and 41, have been remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation.
