Kelantan police have warned against illegal river crossings due to falling water levels and advised travelers celebrating the festival to use official border crossings.
Kota Bharu: Police have issued a strict advisory to residents of the Sungai Golok River border with Thailand to use only legal entry points for their Adelphitri visits.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusof Mamat expressed serious concern over a possible increase in illegal crossings due to the river’s shallow water level.
“The shallow river conditions may create opportunities for some parties to cross the river illegally, especially during the festival season,” he said.
He urged the public to comply with the law and use official routes to avoid facing strict enforcement action.
Mohammed Yusuf confirmed that police surveillance and enforcement would be intensified at known hotspots for illegal crossings.
He reminded travelers to exclusively use authorized immigration, customs, quarantine and security complexes.
These official posts are located in Rantau Panjang, Pengkalan Kubor and Bukit Bunga.
The warning comes after border authorities earlier predicted higher traffic volumes.
Rantau Panjang Malaysian Border Control and Security Agency deputy commander Bakri Sulaiman said about 50,000 travelers are expected at the Rantau Panjang ICQS complex.
This figure covers a period of six days, spanning the three days before and after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
The estimate includes both inward and outward movements between Malaysia and Thailand.
