Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested Moscow could reject the framework of the White House’s latest Ukraine peace deal if it does not uphold the “spirit and letter” of the understanding reached at the August Alaska summit between President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
Lavrov said at a news conference on Tuesday that Russia was awaiting an updated version of the Trump administration’s latest peace plan that aims to end the nearly four-year war.
He warned that the situation would be “fundamentally different” if the terms of the “core understanding” were “abolished”.
Russia has maintained its maximalist demands in the talks, insisting that Ukraine be prevented from joining NATO and required to give up the rest of Donbass as part of any peace deal.

John Hardy, deputy director of the Russia program at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Fox News Digital that Moscow’s assertiveness has been the main obstacle to Trump’s diplomatic efforts over the past 10 months.
“The United States has really shot itself in the foot by swinging between strategies. One month you’re trying to put pressure on the Russians and saying they are an obstacle to peace. The next minute you’re trying to impose your terms on Kiev,” Hardy said.
“We really need continued military support for Ukraine and economic pressure on Russia, and Putin needs to realize that neither the Ukrainian military nor Western, especially American, resolve is going to waver.”

Former CIA station chief Dan Hoffman told “The Brian Kilmeade Show” on Tuesday that he is skeptical about an end to the war, arguing that the United States does not have the ability to force Moscow to stop its aggression.

“Vladimir Putin, his strategic objective has always been to overthrow the democratically elected government of Ukraine. He will engage in negotiations, but he does so to make sure he is asserting Russia’s primacy in his self-determined sphere of influence,” Hoffman said. “I see no evidence that Russia is going to stop its continued attacks on Ukraine.”
