Space debris: Is this a crisis?
European Space Agency’s short documentary film ‘Space Debris: It it a Crisis?’ The position of space debris premiered at the 9th European Conference on Space W BJP on 1 April 2025.
Earth is surrounded by thousands of satellites doing important work to provide telecommunications and navigation services, helps us understand our climate, and answers fundamental questions about the universe.
However, as our use of space is faster like never before, these satellites find themselves navigating the rapid crowded classes in an environment, which are surrounded by streams of rapidly growing debris pieces, which result in space conflict, fragmentation and breakup.
Each piece can damage additional satellites, with the apprehension that a waterfall of confrontation can eventually present some classes around the Earth that is no longer usable. Additionally, the range of loss of huge increase in launch and the number of items that re -enter our environment and oceans are not yet known.
So, do space debris already represent a crisis?
The documentary examines the current position in the Earth’s orbit and tells about the threat space debris for our future in space. It also explains what can be done about space debris and how we can reach true stability in space, because today our actions will result in results for generations to come.
ESA’s Space Security Program
The ESA’s Space Safety Program aims to protect the future of the spaceflight and to protect us, the Earth and our infrastructure on the ground and in space in space.
From asteroids and solar storms to the human-made problem of space debris, ESA works on missions and projects to understand and reduce the dangers.
In the long term, to ensure a safe and durable future in space, ESA aims to establish a circular economy in space. To reach there, the agency is working on the technology development required to make in-arbit servicing and zero-decaris spacecraft a reality.
