On MS Now’s “All In” on Tuesday, Representative Eric Swalwell (D-CA) said that if he became governor in California, he would charge ICE agents and take away their driver’s licenses if they commit crimes.
Host Jason Johnson said, “What would you do if you were able to be elected as governor of California? Yes, we’ve seen not just through a year of this new administration, that these are the states that respond the strongest. It’s the governor of Illinois, it’s the governor of Michigan, it’s the governor of Virginia, Maryland, all that kind of stuff. What would you bring to the table? Because California, just in terms of size and GDP. Like the tip of the spear, what will you bring to the table as Governor of California?
Swalwell said, “Well, as the governor of California you have immense powers and you have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable people in the state. So if the president is going to send ICE agents to chase immigrants in the areas where they work, what I’m going to do is make sure they remove their masks and show their faces, so they can show their identification. And if they commit a crime they will be charged with a crime, If it’s wrongful imprisonment of people, if it’s kidnapping, if it’s assault, they’ll be held accountable. I also think if the governor has the ability to issue driver’s licenses to people in California, you can do a lot of things if you wear a mask and won’t identify yourself, but the bottom line is you have to prosecute, otherwise, the most vulnerable people in our community will always be on the defensive.
