A man in northern Sweden is suspected of making purchases for his wife, in a case that has identified more than 100 men as buyers, leading to separate investigations.
stockholm: A 60-year-old man is suspected of helping more than 100 men buy sex from his wife.
Prosecutor Ida Enerstedt told AFP the man was arrested in late October after his wife, who is in her 50s, complained about him to police.
“He is suspected of assisting the complainant in selling sexual services or profiting financially from her,” Enerstedt said.
The man has been remanded in custody after his arrest on suspicion of shoplifting.
The suspected crimes are believed to have taken place from January 2022 until his arrest last year.
Enerstedt said he expected to file formal charges March 13.
Police are also investigating other suspected crimes related to the case.
The prosecutor declined to say whether the woman was forced to sell sex, citing confidentiality of the ongoing investigation.
Swedish law prohibits buying sex but not selling it.
Public broadcaster SVT reported that the man denied the alleged crime.
He has previously been convicted of several crimes, including assault and unlawful coercion.
Enerstedt confirmed that 120 individuals have been identified on suspicion of purchasing sexual services.
It is unlikely that all of them can be investigated as part of the main investigation.
A separate investigation of the buyers can be initiated after the primary case is over.
