The Penang state government has denied allegations of beach destruction, confirming that earthwork is being carried out for a public seaside pocket park project.
george town: The state government has dismissed as false allegations that green space and the beach near Lot 4658 in Tanjung Bungah will be destroyed for a luxury development.
Zairil Khir Johari, chairman of the State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee, clarified that the ongoing earthworks are for a public seaside pocket park rather than a private project.
He said the state has approved Lone Pine Residences Sdn. Bhd. plans to build wellness suites on the site with the condition that the developer will also build a public park on adjacent state land.
The upcoming park will include jogging tracks, children’s playground, relaxation areas, exercise facilities, seaside promenade and natural greenery.
Zairil said the park, approved in December 2024, will be maintained by the developer and is expected to serve as a community recreation center that will support family activities and promote well-being as Malaysia moves towards becoming an aging society.
He reiterated that the claims of environmental destruction in Tanjung Bunga are malicious, baseless and completely false. – Bernama
