The White House said on Saturday night that President Donald Trump signed an order to deploy 2,000 members of the National Guard in response to the immigration protest at Los Angeles.
Trump’s order comes between continuous clashes between protesters and federal agents executing immigration enforcement operations in LA, causing over 100 arrests.
“In recent times, violent mobs have attacked ICE officials and federal law enforcement agents in Los Angeles, California,” the White House press secretary Karolin Lewit said in a statement.
Levit told NBC News that Trump is making part of California’s National Guard who would otherwise report to Gavin Newsome. The presidents have the right to do so in limited circumstances.
Newsom slammed Trump’s move, called it a “purposeful inflammatory” and said that it would only increase stress. “
Newsom wrote on X, “LA officials are capable of using law enforcement assistance in a moment notice.”
“This is the wrong mission and will destroy the public trust,” he said.
On Saturday, the White House did not show any indication that it was preparing to reduce the situation.
In contrast, the Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth threatened to deploy American Marines besides the members of the National Guard.
“If the violence continues, the active duty marines will also be collected in Camp Pendulton – they are on high alert,” they posted on X.
In a social media post, Trump wrote, “If California Governor Gavin Newsmum, and Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles, cannot do their work, who everyone knows that they cannot, the federal government will solve problems, riots and robbers, the way it should be solved !!!”

The White House also released a formal memorandum from the President to the Defense Secretary, Attorney General and Secretary of Homeland Security.
Memo said, “To the extent that protests or actions directly prevent the execution of laws, they make a form of rebellion against the rights of the United States government.”
“In the light of these incidents and reliable threats to continuous violence, I was vested by the Constitution and the United States laws as President, I call it in units of federal service members and national guards.”
Vice President JD Vance called the protesters “rebel” in a post on X.
Vance wrote, “The rebels carrying foreign flags are attacking the immigration enforcement officers, while a half political leadership of the US has decided that border enforcement is evil.”
SEU California president Labor Leader David Hurta was injured on Friday when he was arrested while observing the protests. The Homeland Department of Security alleged that the Hurta was “obstructing” the federal officials.
