Former NATO ambassador credits Trump for historic NATO defense spending
Former US Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volcker discussed the upcoming NATO summit in Türkiye, which President Donald Trump will attend. Volcker highlighted Trump’s focus on increasing defense spending from allies and the challenges of fostering unity within the alliance, especially after the Iran operation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is pressing the US and Europe to provide more missiles to help defend Ukraine against Russian attacks.
“Last night, Kiev came under a massive Russian attack. Russia launched 68 missiles and 351 attack drones,” Zelensky said in part of a Monday post on X.
President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Ankara, Türkiye this week.
Zelensky called on the US and European allies to come to the meeting with strong decisions in support of Ukraine’s “air defence”.

He wrote in the post, “Our warriors today performed well in intercepting drones and cruise missiles, but unfortunately not Russian ballistic missiles. And the reason for this is the insufficient supply of interceptor missiles. It is extremely important that the world – first of all the United States and our European partners – come away from the NATO summit in Ankara with strong decisions in support of our air defense and thus the safety of ordinary people’s lives.”

He said, “As long as Patriot missiles are in the stockpiles of our allies, Russia is only encouraged to ‘detonate’ residential buildings. The United States and Europe have enough strength to stop this terror.”
Zelensky’s comments come amid the years-long war between Russia and Ukraine.

Zelensky, South Korea’s new President Lee Jae Myung, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are expected to have dinner with NATO leaders on Tuesday, Reuters reported.
