Brittany Snow says moving away from Hollywood saved her life.
In an interview with Self magazine for the cover of its November issue, the 39-year-old actress opened up about giving up her career as an actress at the age of 23, saying, “My life depended on it.”
She had a successful career as an actress, starring in films like “The Pacifier” and “Hairspray” as well as TV shows like “Guiding Light” and “American Dream,” but behind the scenes, she struggled with an eating disorder.
“I mean, there was no way I would still be here—and I’m trying not to be hyperbolic,” she said of her decision to leave the business.

Snow first entered rehab at age 19, but left early to film “John Tucker Must Die” and first opened up about her secret battle in an essay published in People magazine in 2007, titled “My Nine-Year Struggle with Anorexia.”
She recalled her second stay in rehab as a scary time, recounting that a girl there threatened to sell her story to the media. She then left rehab, and with the support of her parents, began an outpatient program for a year, which she said included individual therapy, classes, meetings, and mandatory check-ins with the program’s director.

“I mean, there was no way I would still be here—and I’m trying not to exaggerate.”
“In rehab, I found that there was a lot of reliance on the fact that you’re in the walls, you’re in a place,” he said. “You don’t have to go out to dinner, you don’t have to order out at a restaurant, you don’t have to be with your friends when they’re all eating ice cream and drinking wine.”
She added, “I think resetting my mind to where I can trust myself and trust myself, I can be in a place and feel like I’m not going to do anything harmful to myself, was the best thing about my recovery.”

Her first major role in Hollywood was the 2012 film “Pitch Perfect”, she said, “that movie was really special to me” and she felt grateful to be on set every day “because I didn’t think I was ever going to work again.”
Most recently, Snow starred in the smash Netflix hit, “The Haunting Wives” as Sophie, who moves from Chicago to a small town in Texas and finds herself attracted to Margo, played by Malin Akerman. Their friendship soon turns sexual, leading to several intimate scenes between Akerman and Snow.

Despite suffering from an eating disorder, Snow says she is not thinking about her body while filming nude scenes, “People will talk about that kind of recovery,” but she never saw it for herself.
“I’ve found that a lot of men in sex scenes are really focused on themselves and how they look and whether their abs look good and they don’t necessarily think about your experience,” she said. “And with Malin, it was so collaborative like, ‘Are you OK? Do you want me to do this? Is it OK if I put my hand here?’ Just so much care was taken, which felt really good.”

The show was extremely successful for Netflix and received 5.2 million views in its first week. Snow and Ackerman announced in September that the show would return for a second season via an Instagram video featuring both characters, captioned, “Oh my god, it’s official… ‘The Haunting Wives: Season 2’ is coming for y’all!!”
During an interview with Extra in October, Akerman said that season two should arrive in summer 2026.
“Normally, you get five months of writers’ room, but because it was such a huge success this summer, Netflix said, ‘We need a summer release. We’re going to go back to work in November. You get a month and a half of writers’ room,'” Akerman said. “So, they’re writing on fire.”
